How the scam works
Fraudsters hack or imitate emails from title companies, agents or lenders and send fake wiring instructions that look real. Once money is wired to them it is very hard to recover.
Protect yourself
- Always call to verify wiring instructions using a phone number you already know — not one in the email.
- Be suspicious of any email that changes instructions or asks you to act urgently.
- Never share bank details by email or text.
- After you wire, call us to confirm we received it.
If you think you have been targeted
Call your bank immediately to try to stop the transfer, then call us at (703) 723-3777 and report it to the FBI at ic3.gov.
